    Experimental Investigation of Significance Parameters in Surface Grinding – Quality Evaluation

    The resurgence of the high quality and precision parts by manufacturing industries has enabled the development of ultraprecision machine tools. Surface roughness and tolerances are the most critical quality measures of any mating mechanical parts produced. The quality evaluation requirement of manufactured parts is becoming the prime factor as it determines not only the esthetics values, but also the lifespan and function of its purpose. Grinding is one the most popular methods of machining hard materials which widely known as random point cutting. The main aim of this experimental work is to investigate the significant parameter(s) in surface grinding which affect the machined surface roughness. Two work materials, namely, mild steel and carbon steel have been investigated with two variables; feed rate and depth of cut for the response of surface roughness totaling eight experiments with three replications. Statistical approach using Design of Experiment (DOE) has been carried out in this investigation. The ANOVA results of the analysis have been based to determine the significance and correlation of the input and output parameters

    The Relation between Manufacturing Sustainability and Lean Production in Malaysian Industries - An Initial Study

    A diversity of techniques and practices in Lean as a tool for cultivating a culture of continuous improvement has successfully produce a holistic approach in achieving a high level of sustainability in manufacturing. Therefore, this study was undertaken to investigate the current performance of manufacturing sustainability in Malaysia’s manufacturing industry, and the contribution of Lean on manufacturing sustainability. The findings show that Malaysia’s manufacturing industry has a high sustainability in social competency, followed by economy and environmental. Even though the sustainability in environmental is ranked lowest, the result revealed that aiming to have better control in environments and labour safety is crucial in producing high quality products. In addition, the correlation analysis revealed that this situation has a high relation to the adoption of Lean in production operations. A high competency in adapting the Lean do not just increase the manufacturing efficiency, but also has a substantial influence in producing a sustainable product. This indicates that the Lean is not just suitable in fulfilling the manufacturing function, but has potential to be adapted comprehensive, primarily in achieving high manufacturing sustainability

    Review the influence of lean tools and its performance against the index of manufacturing sustainability

    Lean Production is known as a social-technical management philosophy that encompasses multiple disciplines that focus on increasing the manufacturing productivity by emphasising on the elimination of waste, and increasing the value-added activities. Recognising the internal influences brought by Lean in manufacturing practices, this article focuses on how the convergences in Lean philosophies are able to contribute in establishing a sustainable manufacturing practice. Based on three performance of sustainability, namely the Competency Accomplishment Index, Economic Achievement Index and the Environmental Responsiveness Index, the discussion is focused on exploring how performance of Lean implementation contributes in increasing the development performance of sustainable manufacturing. The findings in this study are able to be used for future researches in formulating new strategies in managing the manufacturing operations. This eventually brings an enormous benefit for further research in improving the operational efficiency, in order to remain competitive in dealing with the intense competition in a global manufacturing environment

    Constructing a Shariah Document Screening Prototype Based on Serverless Architecture

    The aim of this research is to discuss the groundwork of building an Islamic Banking Document Screening Prototype based on a serverless architecture framework. This research first forms an algorithm for document matching based Vector Space Model (VCM) and adopts Levenshtein Distance for similarity setting. Product proposals will become a query, and policy documents by the central bank will be a corpus or database for document matching. Both the query and corpus went through preprocessing stage prior to similarity analysis. One set of queries with two sets of corpora is tested in this research to compare similarity values. Finally, a prototype of Shariah Document Screening is built based on a serverless architecture framework and ReactJS interface. This research is the first attempt to introduce a Shariah document screening prototype based on a serverless architecture technology that would be useful to the Islamic financial industry towards achieving a Shariah-compliant business. Given the development of Fintech, the output of this research study would be a complement to the existing Fintech applications, which focus on ensuring the Islamic nature of the businesses

In addition, needs towards an automatic indexing platform for Shariah sources is also discussed in this research. Qualitative research methodology is adopted to review past literatures on IIR, data indexing, and SVM, the popular method of algorithms classification for text categorization. This research would be significant to Islamic banking industry in terms of strengthening the compliancy of the industry towards Shariah (Islamic rules) by proposing an IIR to the industry players. It also would add to the literature on Islamic finance especially in the context of financial technology.     A Systematic Approach To Model Human System In Cellular Manufacturing

    Manufacturing becomes increasingly complex as more variations and uncertainties are introduced to the system. Human competencies are valuable to the operation and are considered to be the most flexible manufacturing component. However, there is still lack of study on the impact of human aspects to the cellular manufacturing system performance. This article reports a case study application to evaluate the human impact in the complex cellular manufacturing system. Specifically, this work shows a systematic approach to depict and evaluate the human dynamics and attributes in measuring the labor utilization and determining the ideal man-machine configuration. The literature on modelling technologies relevant to cellular manufacturing design and change is presented to provide the rationale for the use of heuristic and enterprise modelling for this study. Evaluations on the existing human system model, CIMOSA and the heuristic mathematical model resulted in the development of an enhanced human system model framework. The newly developed model focuses on the aspects of human dynamics and attributes. To improve human work measurement data accuracy, the model also uses Maynard Operational Sequence Technique (MOST). An expert system was also developed which greatly reduced the time and effort spent on data entry and data analysis. An example using a multi-national semiconductor assembly and test company is presented where 20% improvement in resource efficiency and additional machine to a labor reconfiguration was achieved without any human fallout

    A Review on Optimistic Impact of Cleaner Production on Manufacturing Sustainability

    As a continuous application of an integrated environmental strategy, Cleaner Production (CP) is seen to have a substantial impact in establishing a sustainable manufacturing system. Thus, this paper explores and discusses intensively the impacts and benefits gains from the CP implementation that influences the sustainability development. The findings show that CP have optimistic impact on manufacturing competency, environment and economics performance which considered most significant influence on sustainability. Besides, economic performance was identified as an ultimate goal in manufacturing sustainability that can be enhanced significantly by competency and environmental performance. This paper provides the correct translational process of CP in order to achieve high level of sustainable manufacturing practice included the specific characteristics of performances. It can be referred as a guideline for manufacturing firms to define and measure performance based on CP implementation

    The ability to adapt with the cleaner production in various dimensions of manufacturing successfully increases the sustainability in production operations. Driven by the opportunity for improvement, this study was undertaken to explore the extent to which cleaner production practice influences the level of manufacturing sustainability in the context of Malaysian industry. The findings from this initial study showed that the execution performance of this practice on a regular basis and systematic brings positive effects on all the necessary components in establishing the sustainable manufacturing namely environment, economy and competency. Emphasis on systematic environmental management practice found to encourage comprehensive actions in addressing the environmental concerns. This subsequently increases the competency in management and operation, which eventually provide benefits for financial and environmental performance. Moreover, the findings also can be used as a referral for the next research, primarily in formulating a comprehensive strategy in achieving sustainability in manufacturing, as well as enhancing the continuity of business in the future
